To accurately measure the quantity of
ingredients you add to your beer, your home brewery should
ideally be equipped with two scales. A fairly accurate ounce or
gram scale like the one shown on the left can be used for
ingredients that are added in small quantities. For measuring
grain or dry malt you'll need a larger pound or kilogram scale
like the one shown on the right. Each of the scales should have
the ability to be zeroed or adjusted to zero with an empty
container setting on them. That way your measurement will be
accurate and not reflect the weight of the container. On the
digital scale on the left this is easily accomplished. As you can
see on the right, I've had to pre-adjust the scale to the weight
of the container I use to hold grain, thus the less than zero
weight shown without the container.
